Roman is an arbitration specialist with extensive experience in national and cross-border matters, with particular emphasis on the energy and oil and gas sectors. He holds Ph. D in Conflict of Laws and was previously an associate professor at Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Additionally, Roman is an arbitrator of the Arbitration Court for Sport at the Russian Olympic Committee and editor of the International Commercial Arbitration Review (Moscow).

In recent years Roman has advised on a multi-million dollar ICSID investment treaty arbitration against the Republic of Kazakhstan, and acted in LCIA, ICC, AAA and MKAS arbitrations.

Roman is qualified as an Advocate in Russia.

He is named a “rising star” by Chambers and is also highly ranked by Legal 500. Finally, Roman was on the Best Lawyers list in the field of litigation and dispute resolution compiled by the Vedomosti, the leading business paper in Russia (equivalent of FT).

Track Record in the field of International Arbitration

  • Handled a multi-million investment arbitration before the ICSID against Republic of Kazakhstan.
  • Represented Belgian and Irish companies before LCIA in a real estate dispute.
  • Representing a Cyprus company before the American Arbitration Association in a dispute concerning disclosure of information to a company’s shareholder.
  • Represented a Russian company on proceedings before LCIA in a breach of warranty case. The case involved complex mixture of English law and Russian law issues.
  • Represented a group of companies in four parallel LCIA arbitrations in connection with put option agreements.
  • Represented a Russian oil refinery in a high-profile ad hoc arbitration which took place in London.
  • Represented a Cyprus company in a LCIA arbitration in London and subsequent settlement negotiations.
  • Represented a Tajikistan enterprise in a multimillion arbitration against a Swiss company before the International Commercial Arbitration Court at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
  • Represented a leading international sea carrier in ADR settlement negotiations; successfully settling the dispute.
  • Applied for interim injunctions to Russian courts including those in support of a pending LCIA arbitration. Enforcing obtained LCIA awards in Russia.
  • Represented a Swedish company in proceedings for the enforcement of an ICC Arbitration award before the Commercial Court of first instance in Irkutsk (Eastern Siberia, Russia). The award was successfully enforced and the amount due recovered in full.
  • Represented a South-African Company in proceedings for enforcement of SCC Arbitration award before the Commercial Court of first instance in Yakutsk (Russia).
